What do I need to submit to NIH?
Submit an electronic version of the final peer-reviewed manuscript for peer-reviewed publication accepted into a journal on or after April 7, 2008 that arises from any direct NIH grant or cooperative agreement, any direct funding from an NIH contract, any direct funding from an NIH Intramural Program, or any NIH employee. Do I have the rights to submit this?
“Authors own the original copyrights to materials they write. Consistent with individual arrangements with authors' employing institutions, authors often transfer some or all of these rights to the publisher when the journal agrees to publish their paper. Some publishers may ask authors to transfer these rights when the paper is first submitted to the journal.
Authors should work with the publisher before any rights are transferred to ensure that all conditions of the NIH Public Access Policy can be met. Authors should avoid signing any agreements with publishers that do not allow the author to comply with the NIH Public Access Policy.

How do I submit required publications?
Before submitting your publications, you will need to:
- Determine if the journal you published in makes the “final published version” available in PubMed Central.
- If your journal is listed on NIH's journal list, follow the guidance for Submission Method A
- If your journal is not listed, follow the guidance regarding depositing the “final peer-reviewed manuscript”
- eRA Common users can use the “Award view” in My NCBI My Bibliography to determine whether their publications are in compliance with NIH Public Access Policy and to associate awards with their publications.
