Dissertation Review and Oral Defense

After completing results or findings (Chapter 4) and discussion, limitations, and conclusions (Chapter 5), the dissertation is ready to be submitted for final review.

Form D – Dissertation Review should be completed by the dissertation committee after final review of the completed dissertation. If revisions are needed, then an additional copy of Form D must be completed. After completing the final review, the dissertation must be submitted through Turnitin for another similarity check.

Next, students orally defend the thesis or dissertation, if required by the department, in front of the committee. Form E – Oral Defense is completed at this time.

If you would like to preview a similarity report of your document before submitting for final review, please use the TurnItIn Practice Submission assignment within the Office of Student Writing and Learning's Academic Integrity Seminar.

Sample Dissertation Defense Presentation

In this video, you can see what a dissertation defense looks like in practice. Please keep in mind that this is just a sample and may not reflect your program's requirements. Be sure to check the specific format, timing, and other guidelines required by your program or department chair.

Oral Defense Calendar

Register for and attend an upcoming dissertation defense using the calendar below. Attending a dissertation defense enables students to:

  • Learn about both the process and the product for an entire dissertation (or research project) journey.
  • Prepare for their own dissertation defense.
  • Support their peers by cheering them on and being present for them.
  • Participate in a scholarly community. This may also provide opportunities for students to network with each other after a defense by extending the conversation over email, phone, or other methods later on. This can provide a more in-depth experience and more guidance for students who attend defenses and can further the impact of the scholarly community beyond the defense itself.
