Zotero Citation Management

Learn how to use the free citation management software Zotero.

Download Zotero

The following are steps demonstrating how to install Zotero Standalone for Chrome on a PC. (For directions on how to install Zotero for other browsers, check out these directions.)

There are two download parts: installing the Zotero library (steps 1-5) and installing the Zotero browser extension (steps 6-7).

1. Go to http://www.zotero.org/ and click the "download" button.

2. On the following page, first download the Zotero library assistant. Select the blue download button.

3. In Chrome, an .exe file will appear in the lower left corner of your browser. Double click the file name to open it. Depending on your browser the location of downloaded files may be slightly different. If you have trouble finding the file, search your computer for "Zotero."

4. Next, the Zotero Setup Wizard will open. Walk through the four steps of the Wizard. Choose "standard" installation, then "install." On the last screen of the Wizard, click "finish."

5. Your Zotero library will open.

6. Next, download the browser extension, also at the Zotero download websiteThe Zotero Connector automatically senses content as you browse the web and allows you to save items to Zotero with a single click. Make sure to install the version that matches your browser, for example, Chrome.  The browser extension allows you to automatically download citation information from journal websites or search tools like Google Scholar.

NOTE: if you are a Safari user, you do not need to do this step -the extension is automatically downloaded in step 1.

7. When prompted to add the "Zotero Connector," click add extension.

That's it! You have successfully installed your Zotero library and are now ready to add sources to your library.

View the section below for instructions on connecting Zotero & Zotero Connector to the Chicago School library.

Setup Tips after Installation -Connect to the Library

1) To make the “library look up” option connect to The Chicago School University Library to quickly access articles for which you may not have already downloaded a PDF copy, follow these steps:

Navigate to Preferences in the Zotero toolbar. On a PC, the preferences menu is usually under the Edit menu. On a Mac, look under the Zotero heading:

Access to Zotero preferences menu on a Mac

Next, in Preferences choose the "Advanced" tab. (Make sure you are on the "General" tab within Advanced.) And paste this url into the "Resolver" box with the OpenURL section:

https://search.tcsedsystem.edu/discovery/openurl?institution=01TCSEDSYSTEM_INST&vid=01TCSEDSYSTEM_INST:TCSPP

Then click OK (or just exit the window if on a Mac). Once you have set this up, you can click the Library Lookup button on any citation you're viewing to search for the item online through The Chicago School University Library (and request it through interlibrary loan if we don't have it).

2) Open your browser, and right click on Zotero Connector browser extension to open the menu. Depending on your browser, click on "Preferences" or "Extension Options" and then click on "Proxies." Then, under "Configured Proxies" click +

Next, paste this URL in the "Login URL Scheme" box: https://tcsedsystem.idm.oclc.org/login?qurl=%u

and then paste  %h.tcsedsystem.idm.oclc.org/%p  into the "Proxied URL Scheme" box.
