Zotero Citation Management

Learn how to use the free citation management software Zotero.

Adding Sources via RIS or BIB files to Zotero

Occasionally searchers encounter a database where the Zotero connector doesn't appear or doesn't work, but the database does allow you to mark and save search records and then export those records as either an RIS or BIB file. Alternatively, some researchers need to batch add large sets of sources (up to 1000) to Zotero at one time. Either of these tasks can be completed by creating an RIS or BIB file and then importing that file to Zotero.

The following example shows how to create a list of sources in OneSearch, how to export those sources as an RIS file, and import that file to Zotero. The process would be similar in a database, all include the option to export to a citation manager in RIS format.

Pin Sources to a List and Export to RIS

1. Begin by entering your search terms in One Search. Next, choose the sources you are interested in and pin them to your Favorites list using the pin icon to the right of the source's title. You may pin multiple sources. NOTE:  Make sure you are signed in first!

7. Depending on your browser, the file will download to different locations. For example, Firefox  shown in this example) prompts you with a dialog box and then downloads typically can be found by clicking the download arrow in the top right of the browser screen (1). Chrome typically places downloads in the lower left corner of the screen. In either case, save the file once you have located it from your downloads (2).

8. Once you say okay, your Zotero library will automatically open, and you will be prompted to Import the File. Either leave the box checked to create a new Zotero folder with these sources in it, or uncheck the box and the sources will save to whatever Zotero folder you have currently selected.
